Facebook

What's with all the new Facebook "applications"? I feel like Facebook is getting a little out of hand and cluttered. I like Facebook partly because of the simplicity. Now I feel like there is beginning to be too much stuff on the page. That being said, sooner or later I'm sure I'll give in and add an application of my own.

Full Mailbox

So today I went to the mailbox and found three letters waiting for me. The first was from the Director of Football Administration of the Colts. He said their internships are only during training camps and don't have interns in the fall, but he would keep my resume in case their needs changed. When I looked at their website to get information I noticed that there was no mention of a fall program, but I thought they just might not have posted it yet. The second letter was from the Director of Football Operations at Notre Dame. All of their positions are filled. The last letter was from the Director of Football Operations at Ohio State. Actually, it wasn't a letter. He sent my cover letter back to me and wrote on it saying that there's nothing available. Hopefully, more letters will come in soon.

St. Augustine Beach

Today I went to St. Augustine Beach. I'd been to St. Augustine before, but never to the beach. It was really nice. It took a couple hours to get there from Gainesville. The drive didn't seem that long because I enjoy driving through little towns. I had never heard of most of the places we drove through. For example, Spuds, Francis, Rochelle, and Elkton. There was a Blue Crab Festival in Palatka that seemed interesting, but I was really itching to get to the beach, so we didn't stop.

It was really windy when we arrived at the beach, and the waves looked pretty big. I was wondering if there were any rip current warnings as there had been at home this weekend. We found a spot on the sand to put our stuff down and I went to dip my toes in the ocean to test it out. It was cold. I don't deal well with cold. I wasn't sure how much I was actually going to go in the water. After a few minutes we decided to go all the way in. The lifeguard stand had a red and yellow flag on it, so I decided to go ask the lifeguard what it meant in case there were rip currents. He said it just meant a lifeguard was on duty. That made me feel more comfortable about the waves.

The waves were big and great for bodysurfing. There was one wave that carried me all the way to the shore and then pushed me under the water. That was pretty intense. I would've been really scared if I didn't know I was in shallow water. As it started getting windier, I got colder and decided to go back on the sand. Laying out there was exceedingly relaxing. There's a pier at the beach, so we decided to walk over and check it out. Next to the pier are warning flags and explanations for what they mean. It turns out that there was actually a rip current warning. Granted, the flag wasn't the same as the one at the lifeguard stand, but as a lifeguard he could've told us about the warnings.

All in all it was a fun time, and I'd highly recommend St. Augustine Beach.

"She don't need to be out here"

Last night Miya, Ari, and I went walking around South Beach. For those of you who may not know, Memorial Day weekend is a really big deal in Miami Beach. Hundreds of thousands of people come from around the country to have a good time and pretty much every hip hop star is at some club on the beach. Well, we were running on pretty limited funds, so instead of spending money in the clubs we decided to just hang out and enjoy the action.

The ride over the MacArthur Causeway took foreverrr. Luckily the night was really breezy, so going at a snail's pace with the windows down wasn't too bad. There were some pretty interesting sights on the causeway. Of course the views of the skyline and the Port are always beautiful. Judging by the attire of the people in the surrounding cars, everyone was going to the beach for the same reason. One guy in an exceedingly lime green car from Georgia blew us a few kisses. Every so often some very...umm..."aromatic" smoke from the car next to us would waft through the windows. Slowly but surely we made it off the causeway and onto the beach. Once we were there the traffic was backed up from the causeway all the way down to Ocean Drive, where I was hoping to find a parking space. Luckily, unlike most of the tourists there I knew an alternate way to get down to Ocean Drive from the causeway. It turns out that if we had stayed with the other cars, the road would've been blocked off where we were trying to go. I usually start off looking for beach parking on 6th & Ocean. This time I didn't find a spot until the very end of the strip on 14th.

I was hoping to see at least one celebrity while we were walking around. Not too long after we got out of the car we saw Fabolous. I guess that counts for something. We also saw three people lying on the ground in handcuffs surrounded by what looked like the entire bike and foot patrol of the Miami Beach Police Department. Starting from the moment we hit the busier part of Ocean Drive and lasting throughout the night I kept getting grabbed by people. This happens sometimes out in clubs, but this was just out of control. I don't know about the rest of the girls out there, but I find this annoying. Who told you to put your hands on me?! I would like some guy to explain to me why they do this and why they think this works. Despite this the rest of the night was fun and filled with many memorable quotes sent in my direction. Here are the best from the night:

  • "We got little babyface out here."
  • "You're my favorite color."
  • "There she is! There she is!"
  • Some drunk guy walks over, blocks the sidewalk and says, "I know you!" Me: "No you don't." Him: "Oh."
  • "She's so innocent. She don't need to be out here."
  • "That ain't yo hair!"
  • "Let me tie your shoes." Me: "I don't have laces. How will you do that?" Him: "Ya'll from England or something?"
  • "What's up Cadillac Slim?"
  • "You're a good girl, huh? You go to church don't you? I bet you gonna be in church tomorrow."

Texans

Today I checked my mail and inside was a letter from the Houston Texans. This one was from the Director of Football Operations. I got an e-mail last week from the Operations Coordinator. The letter today said they got my stuff and will keep my resume for the future. Last week I was really excited that people were reading my resume, but now I want someone to actually give me an internship.

Championship Mini Movie

Ok, so I've been spending a lot of time on YouTube lately. Here's a pretty cool look at this year's BCS National Championship Game. There are a lot of videos that people have made about Gator football, but this is the best one I've seen so far. The guy really makes it like a movie. Enjoy! Video

"When we turned the White House into The Swamp"

I recently came across the video of the football team's championship visit to the White House. If you haven't seen it, it's worth a look. Video

NFL Network

I love love love love love the NFL Network! It's incredible. My dad gets it with his DirecTV package, so the only time I get to see it is when I'm at home at his house. I miss it dearly when I'm in Gainesville. Watching NFL Network continually reinforces how much I love football and how much I want to work in the NFL. Tonight I watched an hour-long show about the Arizona Cardinals' mini-camp. Last week I got to watch an NFL Europa game. You can't get this stuff anywhere else. Their latest slogan is "Football. 24.7". Honestly, what can be better than football 24 hours a day? The one year my spring break coincided with the NFL Network's broadcast of the Combine was excellent. My dad didn't understand why I was so fascinated by just watching a bunch of people run around. I just love anything having to do with football, even down to the most basic drills. One of my hopes this fall is to be able to afford some kind of DirecTV or digital cable package that will give me the NFL Network, especially since they started broadcasting live games last year. I need my NFL Network!

Giants

So...

Today I got an actual letter in the mail from the New York Football Giants. This was from the Director of Player Development. He says they no longer need an intern, but they'll keep my resume. I'm pretty impressed that he sent an actual letter instead of an e-mail. I'm thinking that today I might start sending e-mails to people I haven't heard from. I don't know when I'll actually resort to calling people. I think I'm still a little too nervous for that.

Clinton Portis

I'm back. Again. I guess I've had a lot to say today. Anyhoo...

I don't know if you've heard, but Clinton Portis recently defended Michael Vick in his whole dog fighting fiasco. As you can see in this video Clinton basically said that people should be able to do whatever they want in the privacy of their own homes, whether it be dog fighting or not. The media got a hold of this and there have been lots of articles and tv and radio airtime given to this. This hasn't just been covered by ESPN and other sports shows, but also CNN, MSNBC, etc. But here's the thing...

I don't care what Clinton Portis has to say! Whyyy are people paying so much attention to what Clinton Portis has to say about dog fighting? It doesn't matter! Ok, so Clinton Portis thinks dog fighting isn't so bad. Okay...and??? What's the difference to anyone? Clinton Portis isn't paid to voice his opinions. He's not a member of the media. He's not the head of the Redskins. He's not the head of anything. He's a guy who gets paid to run with a football.

Please be clear...I am not defending him or what he said. It was pretty ridiculous, especially the part about Michael Vick being a positive role model. I just don't understand why the media chooses to focus so much on this. Clinton Portis said something stupid. Is that really surprising? This is the same guy who dresses up in costumes to give press conferences--press conferences about football, not legal issues. I'm also not trying to say that the opinions of athletes are not valid. But should there be so much focus on them? What about the opinions of actual leaders or people who actually make a difference?

This is a problem I've had with the media for a while. For example, I DO NOT care about the paternity of Anna Nicole Smith's baby. Why did we have to hear about this for more than a month? Save that for Maury, not CNN. I understand that if you don't like what you're seeing you can change the channel, but what do you do when every news channel is talking about Anna Nicole?

Why is anyone surprised by this man's comments?

Alas! The super highly charged argument between Rosie and Elisabeth is here for your viewing enjoyment, as promised. Enjoy!...or, umm...just watch.

Broncos

So...

I got my second response to the resumes and cover letters I sent out. This one was from the Director of Football Administration of the Denver Broncos. Unfortunately, he said they don't have any planned internships in football operations. He said he would pass my resume along to Human Resources. Luckily, I already sent my resume to the HR director of the Broncos. We'll see how it all pans out. Again, I am disappointed that there was nothing there, but I am really happy that he actually read my resume and cover letter. I know that a lot of times people don't even pay attention to unsolicited resumes, so I'm glad to know that it was actually opened.

p.s. If anyone knows of anyone who'd be of any help in my internship search, the assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Overheated Hot Topics

So I'm sitting here trying to force myself to get dressed and ready to run the errands I need to run before class. However, I'm watching The View, which is seriously slowing down the process. I haven't been a big fan of The View since Rosie O'Donnell replaced Meredith Vieira. It's not because I didn't like Rosie, but Meredith served as a moderator and level head on the show. Rosie is so openly opiniated that I don't think she properly filled that role. Rosie and Joy Behar are so far to the left and Elisabeth Hasselbeck is so far to the right that there's no one in the middle to reign them in, since Barbara Walters isn't on everyday.

Anyhoo, a few minutes ago Rosie and Elisabeth got into a really, really, really heated argument. It was...intense. It wasn't one of those staged, "we're just going to disagree for the sake of the show" arguments. You could tell this was real. You could see the awkwardness during the rest of the show. I think it stemmed from some comments Rosie made a few days ago that she felt Elisabeth didn't back her on. Now, I don't agree with the majority of Elisabeth's views, but I do respect that when she voices her opinions she actually has facts to back her up. She also never backs down, no matter what; even this morning when Rosie was literally yelling at her.

It was really riveting and somewhat uncomfortable to watch. Joy and Sherri Shepherd, the guest co-host were clearly unnerved. They both tried changing the subject and Joy even tried getting the directors to go to commercial.

I really hope someone puts this one YouTube soon. If and when they do, I'll post the link here.

Back in the Swing of Things

I know it's been a pretty long time since I've posted anything, but I've been pretty busy with graduations and resume sending, etc. Anyhoo, I'm back and here's what's new...

Last Thursday I sent out all of my resumes and cover letters, so I figured they should be arriving on Monday or Tuesday at the latest. I even had a dream about it on Sunday night. I've been anxiously awaiting some kind of response from anyone, and nervously trying to muster up the courage to contact those I don't hear from. Well, this morning I saw an e-mail from the Houston Texans in my inbox. I was really excited and anxious to read what it said. It was from the Operations Coordinator, and unfortunately all of their positions are filled. On the bright side, I at least know that he opened it and read it enough to get my e-mail address. Sometimes that's half the battle. So now I wait some more. I think either today or tomorrow I'll start sending out e-mails or calling the others. Or, as was recently suggested to me, I could just show up at their office. The Falcons are close enough for me to do that. Maybe this means a trip to Atlanta. ;-)

Yesterday I watched The Family Stone and Babel. Well, I'd already seen the first half of The Family Stone but never got to finish it. I'm glad I did because it was really good. I really wasn't expecting much from this movie, but I was pleasantly surprised. And then there was Babel. Babel was incredible! I'd even venture to say that it's one of my favorites. It's one of those movies that really gets to you. It was really, really well-made. It kind of reminds me of Crash in a way. Not in the subject matter, but in the way it was put together. If you haven't seen these two movies, hop to it.

That's all for now.

Flat Tire

So this morning before leaving the Ville I realized that my tire was completely flat. It was soft when we went to Cedar Key, but we put air in it and rolled on. What I saw this morning definitely couldn't be fixed with an air hose. Thankfully, my family was in town this weekend, so after they ate at Shoney's they came to see about the tire. I got a lesson in tire changing from my dad and uncle and now I feel that I'd be able to change a tire if the need arose. Turns out I had run over a screw that was lodged pretty deep.

After changing the tire we took it over to Tire Kingdom since I had just purchased four new tires just a little over a month ago (before driving to Atlanta for the Final Four). When we got there the guy said it couldn't be replaced since the screw was too close to the sidewall. However, he gave us a very, very, very good deal on a new tire and road hazard coverage for the future.

Before leaving the Ville I got some food from one of my favorite places: Waffle House! Of course, it was absolutely delicious. :-) I love that place so much. They were really busy so it took a lot longer than usual to get my food, but I can't be in a bad mood at the Dub House. :-)

Worst Football Game EVER!

Right now I'm watching Florida-Florida State 2003. This is the worst football game of my entire life. After more than four years, I've still never watched more than a few minutes of this game on tv. Watching it in person was horrible enough. To this day, I still cannot say that we lost this game. The ACC refs stole it from us. The general consensus (outside of Tallahassee) was that this was the worst officiated game most sports reporters had ever seen.

It was the Saturday after Thanksgiving, and I came back up to Gainesville the Friday after Turkey Day, much to my dad's disappointment. The morning of the game was my first of three experiences seeing a live taping of my favorite tv show: ESPN College Gameday. It was freeeezing! When I left my room at about 7 that morning it was 38 degrees. That day Lee Corso picked us to win, which was exciting to me. This was before I knew about the curse.

I was beyond excited for my very first UF-FSU game. The whole game was really, really close. But, the whole game was also officiated by the worst crew ever. They didn't just mess up on one call...they messed up on Florida calls the entiiiiire game. Florida lost and a melee ensued on the field after FSU players raised a Gator head and stomped on our F.

Watching this game makes me very nostalgic. Florida Football struggled a lot that year, but there's still something I miss about it. Maybe it's because it was my first year of Gator football, but everyone and everything involved in that team still holds a special place in my heart. Zook, Zaunbrecher, Leak, Caldwell, Crowder, Fason, Kight, Double D, Carthon, etc. And I must make special note of my faaaavorite player that year: Ben Troupe. I loved hearing 90,000 people yell, "TROOOOUUUUUUUUPE!!!" after he made a big play, which was quite often. One thing I do not miss is seeing Chris Rix. Looking at him still makes my stomach turn.

Even though this game is still tough for me to watch, my cousin's sage advice helped put it into perspective: We're champions, they're not. :-)

De La Hoya vs. Mayweather

Ok, so...

My family is in town for my cousin's graduation, and they were trying to find someplace to watch the boxing match between Oscar De La Hoya and Floyd Mayweather. I'm not a boxing fan, but I'll watch a big fight if I'm with other people who are watching it. This happens to be the biggest fight in a long time. HBO has even had a series following all the preparations and hype leading up to it. So anyway, my family wanted to find a place to go to watch the fight. I figured Gator's Dockside would be showing it, since they show everything, so I called them first. To my extreme surprise, they weren't showing it. So I called Ale House. And Hops. And Hooters. And every restaurant that has a tv, but noooooo one was showing it! What's going on here?! At about 3 or 4 places, I got a response similar to this: "Thank you for calling Beef O'Brady's. We're not showing the fight." So unfortunately, no one in my family will be seeing the biggest fight of the year.

Earlier today, however, we were all able to watch the biggest horse race of the year: the Kentucky Derby. I come from a family of big horse racing fans. We were eating at Red Lobster when everyone realized that it was getting closer to the time of the race. I've never seen a group of people leave a restaurant so fast. (Actually, I've seen four people leave Mellow Mushroom in a big hurry, but that's another story). You should've seen everyone run up the steps when we got back to the hotel. We all picked a horse and placed our bets. My little brother's horse, Street Sense, won the race. My brother's got big pockets now, raking in $8. I would absolutely love to go to the Kentucky Derby one day.

Gator Stompin'

Sooo...

I did end up going to Gator Stompin'. I figured that if I didn't go this time I'd never go, since I won't be here in the Fall. I also thought that selling my book back would cover the cost. Anyhoo, it was bad. A lot of the places that participated ran out of stuff to give out way too early. I also thought you got a choice of what you can get at each place, but that's not how it works. Overall, it wasn't a good experience. On a positive note, I discovered a band called ColourSlide. They were performing at XS, and they were really, really good! I was so impressed and joined their mailing list. Another plus was seeing The Alliance. They do the song, Tattoo, which is one of the most ignorant songs ever created, but it's great. Even though there were only about 15 or 20 people there, it was good.

I've been trying to contact AOI Media, the company that puts on Gator Stompin' to try to get some reimbursement, but I haven't been able to reach them. This is not over!

Cedar Key

Have you ever been to Cedar Key? If not, you should go. It's a cute little quaint island town. With a population of about 800, there's no need for a traffic light in this place. When you drive into Cedar Key you realize that it's not like most other places you've been. None of the businesses are chains or franchises; just mom and pop stores and restaurants. Most of the restaurants boast some form of seafood, especially clam, which is Cedar Key's specialty.

The beach of Cedar Key is really nothing to speak of. The length is probably less than a football field. However, the other water views are great. The whole scene is traditional old Florida. After spending the afternoon walking around Cedar Key we ate at Dock Street Depot. It had a wonderful screened in outdoor seating area with a view of the Gulf. The food was DELICIOUS! :-) I had a shrimp po'boy, which was fantastic. Allysha and Danielle enjoyed their hamburgers. To make the meal even better, we could see dolphins swimming and splashing in the water.

Getting to Cedar Key from Gainesville is incredibly easy. Get on Archer Road (which turns into State Road 24) and drive all the way west. You could literally take Archer Road all the way into the Gulf of Mexico.

VISIT CEDAR KEY! :-)

Ever since I started working in the basketball office I pay more attention to recruiting news. So yesterday I was astonished to read that Lil Romeo...as in the "rapper"...as in, Master P's son...signed to play at USC next year. That's crazy! I don't know why, but it just seems weird.

In other news...Gator Stompin is tonight and I was planning to go. Now I'm not so sure. Seeing as how I'm going to Cedar Key for the afternoon and I still owe my dad money and need to pay rent, I think I should try to cut back on extra stuff I spend money on. We'll see.

Beginning of Summer

So this morning I had my last final, which brought an official end to this semester! The test was in Sport and Society and it wasn't too bad. The first test of the semester was a killer and I got a better grade in my first finance test. What kind of sense does that make? Anyhoo, I'm finished with the semester and it feels pretty good to not really have anything to do. I came home and took a 3-hour nap, and it was fantastic. I knew it was sleepy, but not that much. I still feel a little tired.

With the semester over I guess I can really start focusing on trying to get an internship for the fall. I've put together my resume and cover letter, which is really exciting. It also makes me pretty nervous. I'm so ready to get my stuff sent out so I can really get the process going. I'm applying to football teams in college and the NFL. I want a completely new experience than I've had so far, so I'm applying to places out of state. Even though I think southern fried football is the best in the land, I'm intentionally not applying to SEC teams. After putting together a list of teams I realized I'm applying to 26 places! Out of 26 I should get at least one offer, right? Right? So, here are the places I'm applying.

College: USC, UCLA, Texas, Georgia Tech, Oklahoma, Michigan, Ohio State (yes, yes, I know), Notre Dame, Boston College, UVA, Cal

NFL: Jets, Eagles, 49ers, Giants, Saints, Bengals, Steelers, Texans, Colts, Broncos, Chiefs, Raiders, Bears, Patriots

It's Over!

I am officially finished with Finance!! The final grades came out today, and I juuust barely got a B in the class. :-) I'd like to thank the curve on the test, without whom this moment would not be possible. I hated that class and I'm ecstatic to be rid of it forever! I need to study for my last final tomorrow. I just haven't gotten the motivation to really do it. I'm not sure if lying in bed watching Gilmore Girls is the most effective study strategy, but I'm willing to give it a shot.
