I don't know if you've heard, but Clinton Portis recently defended Michael Vick in his whole dog fighting fiasco. As you can see in this video Clinton basically said that people should be able to do whatever they want in the privacy of their own homes, whether it be dog fighting or not. The media got a hold of this and there have been lots of articles and tv and radio airtime given to this. This hasn't just been covered by ESPN and other sports shows, but also CNN, MSNBC, etc. But here's the thing...
I don't care what Clinton Portis has to say! Whyyy are people paying so much attention to what Clinton Portis has to say about dog fighting? It doesn't matter! Ok, so Clinton Portis thinks dog fighting isn't so bad. Okay...and??? What's the difference to anyone? Clinton Portis isn't paid to voice his opinions. He's not a member of the media. He's not the head of the Redskins. He's not the head of anything. He's a guy who gets paid to run with a football.
Please be clear...I am not defending him or what he said. It was pretty ridiculous, especially the part about Michael Vick being a positive role model. I just don't understand why the media chooses to focus so much on this. Clinton Portis said something stupid. Is that really surprising? This is the same guy who dresses up in costumes to give press conferences--press conferences about football, not legal issues. I'm also not trying to say that the opinions of athletes are not valid. But should there be so much focus on them? What about the opinions of actual leaders or people who actually make a difference?
This is a problem I've had with the media for a while. For example, I DO NOT care about the paternity of Anna Nicole Smith's baby. Why did we have to hear about this for more than a month? Save that for Maury, not CNN. I understand that if you don't like what you're seeing you can change the channel, but what do you do when every news channel is talking about Anna Nicole?
Why is anyone surprised by this man's comments?
